Many people do not understand how I make a living, they are either skeptical and feel I don’t make enough to support myself or they are unrealistic and think I spend all day checking celebrity gossip and counting my money. I can’t blame them of course I used to be both skeptical and unrealistic.

Working from home gives me freedom that most of my friends can only imagine– sleeping in, no commute, no timed lunch breaks, not having to call in sick, the list could go on for pages.

However, it’s not all fun and games. You work irregular hours, the competition is fierce, you are not guaranteed a steady income, there is no health plan or benefits and of course the most negative aspect of working online-scams.

You see the ads all the time “work from home,” “live the life you’ve always dreamed of,” “earn a six figure income in your pajamas.” What some of them should say is, “become a slave to your computer,” “live a life that no one would ever dream of,” “work your tail of for 60 dollars a month,”

But are they all like this? No, of course not, if that were the case no one would be working from home. Determining a scam from a legitimate work at home business starts with research. Whenever you are asked to invest your time and money into something you should make sure it’s worth it. The trouble is doing this research can take up more time and money with
little or no results.

Here are some quick tips to make it easy:
1. Look for contact information on the website
2. Visit Scams.com and ask people in their forums for a review
3. See if you are willing to put in the time to make it work
4. Don’t fall for pictures of fancy cars or even charts of their earnings

However, I noticed that even after I did research I was still skeptical or I got a dazzling review and didn’t look twice before leaping. So here’s my honest advice, there is no magic product. People looking for a get rich plan find scams. But here’s something else to keep in mind every ebook, every ecourse and program will teach you something, even if it is just what to watch out for next time.

The best way to make money online is bring something you enjoy doing and are good at onto the internet. For example if you have a great designer’s eye then you could start a web design business. Likewise if you are good persuading people to do things then affiliate marketing would be perfect for you.

Knowing your talents is the first step to succeeding online. Being willing to put in the effort is the next. Working online is in no way like working a 9-5 job. Most people think they can just quit their day job and find immediate success. For those that think this way, working from home is a nightmare.

They hop from one opportunity to the next, they fall for every trick in the book, and they never take the time to learn how to really make an online business work.

But for those willing to treat an online venture like any business venture, on that requires patients, a little risk and lot of elbow grease then yes working from home can be a dream.

When it comes to starting your own local business, you will want to start a business that has a relatively small amount of competition. In fact, the smaller the amount of competition, the better it will be for you and your business. For instance, if you live in a small town and there are already two or three pet setting services available, it is advised that you do not start another one, as the demand will not be as high as the supply.

Since most businesses, even those that are locally owned and operated, do have competition, it may be a good idea to check out the competition before you decide to start your own business. When checking out your competition, this is easier done if the competition is a retail store or an establishment that you can walk right into. What you will want to do is examine the products or the services available for sale, as well as the costs of each. If you do not think that you can compete with your intended competition, it may be difficult for you and your small business to make a profit; therefore, you may want to refrain from going with your intended business idea. Investors start businesses for various reasons. You may want a better lifestyle for you and your family, or you may be tired of working for others. However, starting a business, no matter what the reason, is not easy. You will have to have dedication and patience.

First, you have to find something you are interested in. Just because something to profitable for one person, does not mean that you are going to be successful. The key is to find something that interests you, because if you are not interested in it, then chances are you will not be able to give the time and effort that it takes to be successful.

You will have to look into what you are interested in, then you will have to research various businesses or investments. For example: if you are interested in collecting old antiques, then you may want to consider starting an antiques business. Get a piece of paper and write down all your interests and business ideas that is related to that topic. This is the first step to starting your business.

Once you have decided what interests you, then you will need to start researching what kind of business you will want. Depending on your situation, you will have a number of options including: an online business, physical business(a business that has a store or office), a mobile business (a business where you provide products or services onsite), or home based business. What would benefit you and your business more? If you are not sure, you may want to consider starting with a few different options to see what works the best.

Next, you will have to consider your resources. If you are selling products, where will you obtain these products? Are their distributors in the area? If you are selling services, such as construction and remodeling, do you have all the necessary tools to complete the jobs? If your business is going to be online, do you have the necessary knowledge to work with the websites you will need (eBay, creating your own website, etc). If not, do you know someone who can? You will have to consider all of these factors.

Once you get an idea of what you are wanting to do, and whether or not you have the resources to complete it, you will then want to consider where the money will come from. The old saying “you need money to make money” is extremely true when it comes to starting a business. Initially, you will need money to obtain your location, you products, or your resources necessary to complete your services. Then once you launch your business, you will need money to live on until your business become successful (your business may not be profitable for awhile). Unless you have the money on hand, you may want to consider looking into business loans or grants.

Finally, once you have completed the plan for your business, you will then have to start thinking about promoting it, after all, a business is not profitable without customers and clientele. What type of advertising best suits your business? Will you advertise locally or nationally?
There are several types of advertising. Media advertising includes placing ads on radio stations, television channels, and in various other publications. These types of ads are often much more affordable then larger types of advertising. Alternatively, you may want to consider larger advertising such as billboard, or online marketing such as website.
