Create Your Outline – The First Step to Successful Article Writing
While in junior high, high school and on into college, you labored through learning and practicing the process of outlining essays, stories, articles or other writing tasks, that were assigned.
You may have hated it but when you actually worked, you found that it helped you create your written assignments in a much shorter time. It also provided the focus you needed in order to complete your work successfully.
Although many have created an outline countless times before, they still somehow see it as a daunting task that they would just rather skip altogether. Now though, writing has become serious; your job security may depend upon your ability to create reports, write articles and other documents. You might know in your heart that successfully fulfilling your writing obligations is good for your job; your heart however may be saying that you are in turbulent waters.
What are you going to do? You know that your preparation for writing your article is tantamount to its success in conveying your message to your audience. You have an idea that you wish to communicate; now you have to make a plan for each succeeding step to unfold so that your audience is carried along to the logical, succinct conclusion to which you and they wish to arrive.
Being prepared makes the job easier and faster. Therefore, commit yourself to creating an outline that operates as the design or blueprint for your article. This will guide you in creating an attention-getting introduction, body and conclusion.
To get there you must begin the process of putting your outline together by first researching your audience. Let them tell you what their interests are, what problems for which they require a solution; and what information they have need of to provide answers to their stated difficulty.
Then, brainstorm ideas you have managed to glean from your research. The very nature of brainstorming is that you write down everything you think of, without judgment or censoring, whether it is pertinent to your article or not. Do not worry; you will go back over your brainstorming notes later to determine what will and will not be in your article. Right now, everything is fair game; write it down.
Now, think of ways to connect with your audience through their stated interests. Review and reread your ideas and notes, arrange and rearrange them so that you gain mastery, sufficient familiarity and comfort with your topic. The degree to which you do this will be the corresponding ease you will experience as you move through your writing task.
Next, discover your sub-topics and sub-titles. As you provide an immediate attention grabbing first sentence for your article, so you should also create such for your sub-topics. Be concise with facts to point and counterpoint your article’s main idea.
After you have worked on your outline for a self-determined time, read and re-read it for content, sequence and logic. Repair any obvious errors you might see; then, lay it aside for a day or two. When you pick it up again you will be looking at it with a fresh, clear mind. As you do, you will gain a new perspective on what you have written. There may be items, which require rearranging, or you may need to add or take something out. Whatever the case, it is best to see your work with fresh eyes after being away from it for a time.
When you are comfortable with your outline, you are now prepared to write the first draft of your article. Your article like your outline may be one of several drafts that you will write. It is important to note that your ultimate aim is to express your ideas in such a manner as to meet the intention and details of the outline and have them flow in a logical and intelligent manner.
Writing down some of your ideas and sentences that you feel will look good in your article and covers pertinent information will give your article the substance it needs to keep the reader’s attention. Using familiar language, attention-grabbing stories, and connecting facts as the focal point could help make your commentary creative, interesting and appealing to your readers.
Be sure that within the framework of your article that you connect your paragraphs and sub topics rationally and sequentially. Write a compelling introduction so that it ushers in the ideas of your article; fill the body with convincing facts so that it conveys solid solutions to the challenges your audience faces and conclude with a summary of the ultimate solution they will get to their stated need as well as the benefits they’ll take pleasure in receiving.
Read and reread what you have written. Always refer to your outline so that you will not drift away from what you determined to be your article’s intent. It is very easy to find yourself caught in the writing moment and soon find that you are far a field from your intended writing target.
Referring to your outline often will help keep you on track. The time you spend outlining your articles will serve well as your guide to successful writing. Your audience will prove this as they clamor for more and more of your written materials. Rely heavily upon your outline, as it will prove to be a most helpful tool in the writing of all of your articles.
Properly preparing for writing articles does take time and proceeds through several steps but they are ones that will net you great success. As time goes on you will become more and more adept at the process so that it becomes second nature. In addition, as you trust your ability to create a concise outline, the time spent developing your outline and writing your articles will become less while the quality of your articles will exceed your greatest expectations.
